I just read on a pseudo-Charedi website [which is really an irreverent cover for a subversive "let's destroy Torah" with zero Yiras Shomayim website] the old complaint: It is NO FAIR!!! Chilonim die on the battlefield!!! Let us see some dead Charedim, too.
Really. That is the argument as to why Charedim should serve in the army.
I won't get into the very valid question of the morality of not serving when others are and the other question of how a Ben Torah doesn't serve when you see throughout Tanach that we had an army and waging war was a Mitzva and the last section of the Rambam's sefer is the "Laws of Kings and their wars" so why do such a large swath of people not go to the army. I have discussed this elsewhere. The Chazon Ish and other Gedolim were very "religious" and knowledgeable Jews [no less that their critics.... to say the least] and thought about these issues and still decided what they decided. [I will link the best essay to date on the topic which is here].
My problem here is this desire to see dead Charedim. Like - "OK, 5 Charedi soldiers died today so now we are happy. We want to see some of your blood spilled, too. We want Charedi mothers to never sleep a peaceful night again b/c they lost their sons."
To me it is sickening. I don't want ANYONE [good] to die.
If Charedim should serve it is NOT b/c it is only fair that they die, too. They should serve if it is the will of Hashem. Period. We are Jews and that is how we live.
