Sefer Bereishis has numerous themes which run throughout. Each one is interesting and worth studying. You can think about what they are.
I would like to note one theme: Dysfunctional families [with the important caveat that we are dealing with our Avos and are not near their level. But the Torah was given for us to learn from]. It started when Kayin kills his brother Hevel. Then you have Yishmael and Hagar vs. Yitzchak and Sarah. Very tense over there. Then Yaakov vs. Esav. So Avraham and Yitzchak, the first Jews, each have a son who goes off the derech big time - and we suffer from their descendants as we speak and throughout history [imagine one of your sons became a Muslim sheikh and another an antisemitic Catholic priest who sleeps with married women and kills too]. Then there is Yosef and the other Shvatim, a heartrenching drama that takes us through a few parshiyos. Then there is the tension between Rochel and Leah. Then there is the cheating, conniving Lavan who doesn't even spare his son in law Yaakov from his wiles ['עי' ל"א ז]. Before that there is Lavan who lacks respect for his father Besuel [עי' כ"ד נ' ברש"י]. Then there is the tension between Yaakov and Rochel [ל' ב' ויחר אף יעקב ברחל!!]. Yehuda's two sons are successively married to Tamar, sin and are punished with death. Then Yehuda unknowingly has relations with her and almost burns her to death b/c he suspects her of immoral behavior. Then he realizes it was him and admits error.
Is there one consolidated, happy family in Sefer Bereishis?? Not even close.
One Mussar Haskel: If your family is a little or more than a little messed up - don't feel too badly. It is NOT EASY having a normal happy family. Too many issues and personality conflicts. Show me one decent sized family where everyone is normal, happy and well adjusted. No divorce. No one off the derech. No drugs, alcohol or other addiction. No homosexuals or other deviants. Everyone gets along. I would guess that such a family doesn't exist [or exists only on Mars - where anyway according to a recent post a Prof. from Harvard honestly believes that Moshiach is coming from there]. Oftentimes we don't know b/c there is always a lot under the surface but there are always issues. You never know what is going on behind closed doors and more importantly in people's hearts. A person can seemingly have shalom bayis but is secretly miserable. A boy can seem to be doing well in Yeshiva but in the privacy of his room he is watching *bad stuff*. And the list goes on and on.
