An Old But Really Bad Idea

The Gemara says that the fourth bracha of bentching [until אל יחסרנו] called הטוב והמטיב was decreed in order to thank Hashem that those who were killed in the Beitar uprising were brought to burial.

So some people got together and decided that in conformance with Jewish tradition [this is how they presented it] they will NOT say the bracha until the remains of ALL the hostages are returned and buried.

This, in fact, is not an original idea. It was conceived already in the 1800's  - by the Reform movement who decided that whenever a mitzva doesn't appeal to them for whatever reason, just discard it.

But it turns out that we serve Hashem and are bound to Halacha regardless of the circumstances and our personal feelings. If one cavelierly discards a Halacha it is not only an abrogation of the specific Halacha but then reflects on EVERY mitzva this person fulfills as being not because Hashem commanded but because he feels like it.

Very serious.

These people can take a cue from those hostages themselves, who kept Halacha and maintained faith in the most trying of circumstances.
