On May 14th [today/yesterday] 1948, the State of Israel was declared. People often miss the irony in what has transpired since.
The ideas behind the State, as dreamt by the founders, were multifold.
1] One was to create a new type of Jew. No Torah, no Shabbos, no Kashrus, no Taharas Hamishpacha etc. etc. Called in the vernacular "עקירת התורה". Torah is a relic of the past, the galut Jew [ח"ו]. We don't need that anymore [עפ"ל]. We are independent and powerful and have no need to rely on any Higher Power. "להיות עם חופשי בארצנו". Our religion is Zionism, the Hebrew Language and Tzahal. [Everybody is religious in some way. Atheists are religious in their atheism, Woke people are religious in their Wokeism, as we recently wrote on these pages. I heard that idea from someone else and it rings true. The religion of Zionists was Zionism. Today, many of their descendents have "gone of the derech" and adhere to other religions. One prominent one being the religion of Money. אלהי כסף ואלהי זהב].
2] It was also intended to end Anti-Semitism [as Herzl himself envisioned]. Now the Goyim won't have a problem with us b/c we are living in our own little "house" and not bothering anyone. Enough pogroms and persecution!!
3] It was also intended to be a State for Jews [even though Ben Gurion was quite confused as to how to define that term so he reached out to many different type of people to ask them for their definition].
4] It was also based on the premise that we have a historic right to this Land and nobody else does.
75 years later where are we??
1] Unprecedented growth in the population of very strictly observant Torah Jews who davka want to perpetuate the lifestyle of the last 2000 years of galus, including the clothing and language of Eastern Europe. Not Ivrit but Ivris and Yiddish and names like Fraidy Moskowitz as opposed to Chagit Shimshit. At the rate we are going, it won't be long until they [i.e. we] are the majority. Incredible growth of Yeshivos, Kollelim, Beis Yaakov etc. etc. Not to mention the dozens of Hesder Yeshivos and Ulpanot for frum girls. BARUCH HASHEM AND KEIN YIRBU. Chareidim make aliya in large numbers just as Chilonim look for greener pastures in New York, Florida and California [close to a half a million Israelis there]. If Ben Gurion and his cronies would see places like Bnei Brak, Beitar, many neighborhoods in Yerushalayim, Ramat Beit Shemesh etc. they would roll over in their graves.
2] We have basically been at war since we started this whole enterprise. Well over 20,000 people killed by the enemies that surround us including many many more wounded. Our enemies plan daily to annihilate us totally.
3] The Israeli government imported hundreds of thousands of non-Jews from Russia, intending to integrate them into Israeli society.
4] The left [a large swath of the population] no longer accepts the notion that this is a country that belongs to the Jewish people and must remain that way. They want to share it with the Arabs. They see no problem of our government including people who wish to see the dissolution of the State.
How ironic.

Where is this going?
