The Charedi world in EY is often attacked for, among other things, not working. One classical defense is that they DO work. Either the husband works or the wife works or both. But it is very rare to find a family where neither parent works. It is just impractical to pay the bills otherwise.
But there is a BETTER answer: The Gemara says [Sanhedrin 99b] that an apikorus is one who says "מאי אהני לן רבנן" - What do we need Torah scholars for??!! [A refrain often heard in certain Orthodox circles....]. Rashi writes "מאי אהני לן - והם אינן יודעין שעולם מתקיים עליהם". So that isn't enough? They are keeping the world going!! And if someone doesn't believe that? Ahhh - there is ANOTHER Gemara [also in Sanhedrin 38b] for that. Don't argue, we are instructed, with a Jewish apikorus. It is only going to make him a BIGGER apikorus.
