אמת הדבר, שהדרך הממוצע הוא דרך החיים, המאושרים, הראויים לכל אדם, וזאת היא עצת ד' ברוח התורה, והודעת להם את הדרך אשר ילכו בה ואת המעשה אשר יעשון, את הדרך זו בית חייהם. מכל מקום טבע הסגולה הנשמתית הוא נותן, שיחידים ימצאו בעולם, שההסתכלות העליונה, וחיי הפרישות הקיצונית עם הטהרה המופלגה, היא נאותה להם, כדי לכבוש דרך לעולם כולו, להאיר נתיבות עולמים. ואלה הגדולים מוצאים בתכנם הקיצוני את אותה שביעת החיים, והאושר המלא, יותר הרבה ממה שמוצאים אותם רוב בני אדם בלכתם בדרך הממוצע הראוי להם. על כן יחידי סגולה בעלי חסידות מופלגה, זאת היא גם כן מכלל תוכן קדושת ישראל שימצאו בעולם, ובמאפל הגלות לפעמים דוקא אלה הענקים הם הם אשר האירו לנו את כל חשכת החיים, וישימו לנו מעקשים למישור, ומחשכים לאור. Indeed, the middle path is the way of life, the happy path, suitable for every person. This is the counsel of Hashem in the spirit of the Torah, "and He made known to them the way they should walk and the deed they should do" - "the way" being their "home of life" [to live a balanced life]. And these great ones find in their extreme content the same satisfaction with life and complete happiness, much more than most people find when they follow the average path that is right for them. Therefore, the elite, those with exceptional piety, are also part of the overall holiness of Israel found in the world. And in the depths of exile, it is sometimes precisely these giants who illuminate all the darkness of life for us, making the crooked straight and darkness light.
