Secular Zionists and Zionism are strongly connected to Jewish heritage. That is why the Zionists wanted to return to Israel and not any other country. That is why they wanted to revive the Hebrew language and no other language. Israel and Hebrew are very much part of our heritage. They also celebrate/d Jewish holidays and while not always in the traditional way, the commemoration was deeply rooted in our history. They also felt a deep connection to Tanach [see "Chidon HaTanach" - a very secular celebration of the Holiest of Sfarim].
On the other hand, they also wanted to jettison Jewish history and tradition and create a "new Jew" who has no need for Torah Shebial Peh, Shabbos, Kashrus, Taharas Hamishpacha and all of the myriad of Halachos. A Jew who might give Hashem lip service but feel no obligations to follow His word or not even believe in Him at all. [Golda Meir said that she didn't believe in G-d עפ"ל (now she does...) but believed in the people who believed in G-d]. Ben Gurion insisted that Hashem's name not appear in the declaration of independence. [In the end a compromise was made and they wrote "צור ישראל" which everybody could interpret as they wish].
Philosophically, this doesn't seem [to me and many others greater than me] to make sense. If Jewish tradition matters, then the whole thing matters. It is a package deal. If it doesn't matter, then none of it matters. But to cherry pick what you like and drop the rest is silly and empties the whole enterprise of any true objective meaning. It stops being about Hashem, history and tradition and is all about what *we* decide matters. The Jew tries thereby to ח"ו supplant Hashem.
Our soldiers are dying or risking death to fight this war. What are they dying for? A 75 year old Medinah that only weeks ago so many of them were protesting against and even talking about a civil war? Some territory and plot of land? A romantic sense of nationalism no different than French or German nationalism? Those things are worth dying for?
Some would answer - yes. Others aren't so philosophical and don't think about it much. They have a job to do [i.e. being a soldier] and they do it. They are other motivations as well.
But what makes most sense is to risk ones life and be willing to die for Hashem who gave us life and meaning and told us that EY is His gift to us which we must do everything to protect and preserve. And that we are His special people whom it is an honor, privilege and great mitzva to protect. Hashem, Am Yisrael and Torah are eternal. The Medinah, the sense or patriotism or nationalism and other motivations are temporal.
Hashem has a way of getting people to fulfill His will even when they are not fully cognizant of what they are doing. So it would seem that He has hundreds of thousands fighting for His name even though many of them are not aware of this. They *think* that they are fighting for the Medinah or just to kill bad guys.

To whom does the phrase 'Is there a man who is afraid or faint-hearted?' refer? The phrase should be interpreted simply, as applying to a person whose heart is not brave enough to stand in the throes of battle.
Once a soldier enters the throes of battle, he should rely on the Hope of Israel and their Savior in times of need. He should realize that he is fighting for the sake of the oneness of God's Name. Therefore, he should place his soul in his hand and not show fright or fear.
He should not worry about his wife or children. On the contrary, he should wipe their memory from his heart, removing all thoughts from his mind except the war.
Anyone who begins to feel anxious and worry in the midst of battle to the point where he frightens himself violates a negative commandment, as it is written (Devarim 20:3 : 'Do not be faint-hearted. Do not be afraid. Do not panic and do not break ranks before them.'
Furthermore, he is responsible for the blood of the entire Jewish nation. If he is not valiant, if he does not wage war with all his heart and soul, it is considered as if he shed the blood of the entire people, as ibid. 20:8 states: 'Let him go home, lest he demoralize the hearts of his brethren like his own.' Similarly, the prophetic tradition explicitly states: 'Cursed be he who does God's work deceitfully. Cursed be he who withholds his sword from blood.' Jeremiah 48:10
In contrast, anyone who fights with his entire heart, without fear, with the intention of sanctifying God's name alone, can be assured that he will find no harm, nor will bad overtake him. He will be granted a proper family in Israel and gather merit for himself and his children forever. He will also merit eternal life in the world to come as I Samuel 25:28-29 states: 'God will certainly make my lord a faithful house, for my lord fights the wars of God and evil will not be found with you... and my lord's soul will be bound in a bond of life with God.' [Rambam Hilchos Melachim Umilchamoseihem 7-15].
One day soon it will be revealed to ALL that EVERYTHING that happened was a means to ultimately reveal Hashem's glory on earth and ומלאה הארץ דעה את השם כמים לים מכסים.
