There is a debate raging in the USA.
Some people think that Trump is a HORRIBLE President.
Others think that he is a GREAT President [who is "making America GREAT again"].
Others judge him on a case to case basis. When he does good things they are pleased with him and when are policies or actions are wrong [in their eyes] they criticize him.
One woman in the second camp ["he's the greatest"] wrote a letter to the editor published in a frum publication. She asserted that ALL that matters is how he treats the Jews and since he is a friend to the Jews he is 100 percent a great President. Nothing else matters.
I find her parochialism and narrow mindedness so disturbing that I have been itching to write this post for a number of days [been busy with other things...].
There are SHEVA MITZVOS BNEI NOACH. If all that mattered was how Goyim treat Jews the only mitzva would be "Treat Jews well". [That is not even one of them]. Hashem obviously cares how non-Jews act and being nice to Jews doesn't excuse all behavior. There are over 300 million people living in the US. Hashem cares about them, too. Otherwise, he wouldn't have created them. ורחמיו על כל מעשיו - Hashem's mercy is on ALL of his creations. The Kuzari compares the Jews to the heart and the Nations to the rest of the body. Yes, the heart is the most vital organ but without the rest of the body the heart would be useless. The Messianic vision of a perfected world includes Gentiles.
So of course we believe that we are the Chosen People, picked by Hashem to fulfill a special purpose. But nowhere does it say that we are the ONLY nation.
So my point is not to judge whether Trump is a good President. Just to dispel the notion that all that matters about the President of the United States is his relationship to the Jewish people.
