Sometimes it is proper to remember your sins. This is a trigger for teshuva and self improvement. But at other times remembering your sins and failings just brings you down, depresses you, and takes the luster out of life. At those times one must FORGET his sins of the past and LOOK FORWARD to a brighter, happier more pure future. Only in this way can one serve Hashem with zest and simcha!! If you forgot - Hashem will "forget" as well, just as he "forgot" our sin of the עגל הזהב [see Brachos 32b]. Since the memory of the failings and indiscretions is weakened, the memories of the good is strengthened. That is what we ask Hashem אבינו מלכנו זכרנו בזכרון טוב לפניך - Forget the bad - remember the good!
