4. The Attitude of the Faithful Toward Those Who Forsake the Path of Torah
Under no circumstances can we feel genuine love for a fellow Jew who tramples the laws of the Torah with disdain and contempt—laws that are the very seal of our hearts and the lifeblood of our national existence. When we see a fellow brother and covenantal partner publicly consuming forbidden foods or desecrating the Sabbath and festivals, a profound psychological and religious barrier is erected. We can no longer sit together around a single table to eat and drink, which deprives us of the natural fellowship essential for cultivating communal closeness and national brotherhood. This injury is stinging, and the sorrow cuts to the very depths of the soul.
To be sure, there were venerable Jewish leaders of great piety who sought to practice extreme forbearance—restraining themselves and displaying warmth even toward those who had cast off all yoke. Yet the bitter truth remains that this did not stem from a whole heart. They acted solely for the sake of the ways of peace, hoping to draw hearts near over time; but within them seethed bitterness and deep agony toward those who willfully desecrated the nation's sanctities and brazenly trampled the flag for which our ancestors sacrificed their lives. Moreover, only rare individuals gifted with extraordinary self-restraint managed to sustain such an outward pleasantness (which was itself sometimes perceived as a form of flattery). The majority of the public is incapable of remaining silent in the face of such irreverence toward the sacred. This bitterness is thoroughly understandable, for there is a justified internal conviction within the nation that transgressing the Torah dries up the life-marrow of our national spirit.
Therefore, our primary and most urgent task is to address the central axis sustaining the entire House of Israel: concrete action. We must first bolster the practical foundation, and from it develop the rest of the tools. Even if the observance of the Torah appears burdensome at first to those unaccustomed to it (though in truth, "its ways are ways of pleasantness"), they must recognize that national loyalty demands commitment and tangible deeds. Given that we presently possess no other national frameworks, the commandments of the Torah remain the primary instrument expressing connection and mutual responsibility for the whole of Israel. Precisely for the sake of true national peace, these practices must not be perceived as a burden—even by those who have been estranged from them for so long.
5. Our Destiny: Jewish Faith and the Values of the Torah
The seal of the Torah is complete within the Jewish people only when two elements converge: the domain of inner faith and conviction (the roots of the Torah) and practical obligation. If the commandments are performed merely out of custom or for political and national expediency devoid of internal faith, they cannot fulfill their ultimate purpose, refine the spirit, or endure across generations. Thus, the sentiment of faith serves as an indispensable cornerstone—and the national spirit can serve as a magnificent bridge to revive it.
In the initial stage, we must awaken moral recognition of the value inherent in Jewish ideas. Once these convictions are cherished and embraced, the heart will open to receive them ("one who comes to purify himself is aided from above"). The more we witness how a life of Torah elevates our existence and preserves our national distinction, the firmer our faith will become.
At the dawn of our history, faith was forged through miracles and revelation; however, so that this impression would not fade across centuries, Providence planted national sentiment as a steadfast guardian of the covenant. With the passage of time, the power of customs and commandments rooted in the nation for thousands of years only deepens. Nationalism, strengthened by history, guards faith from erosion. Yet we must remember: nationalism itself grew out of faith. As the years march on, appreciation for our roots cultivates love for the practices that preserved us, and these deeds condition the soul to perceive and revere faith in its pristine purity. We must invigorate the national spirit with the awareness that it is a branch growing from the trunk of whole faith.
6. The National Value of Fulfilling the Commandments: A Unified Way of Life for the Nation
There is no need to seek an individual national rationale for every single commandment. It suffices that the overarching national spirit encompasses the broader Jewish way of life, while the particulars of each commandment carry moral and spiritual significance that any contemplative person may grasp according to their own capacity.
The essential point is to recognize that a shared, practical way of life, rooted in the Torah, functions powerfully to unify outlooks and character traits, generating a collective national pulse. Even if the return to observance among the estranged initially stems solely from an awakening of national sentiment, such a return possesses immense value. Though it does not yet represent deep philosophical comprehension, it provides a solid bedrock upon which a complete structure can be built, for authentic nationalism is constructed through actions rather than slogans and rhetoric.
When observance is renewed out of national devotion, it takes root: the moral and spiritual edifices of faith find fertile ground upon which to stand, and fresh insights will spring forth from the fountains of Jewish wisdom. A return born of earnest national awareness holds unique power: it is free of hypocrisy, grounded in genuine love for all of Israel, and immune to false doctrines, for our nation has already tasted every conceivable spiritual crisis. Such a return to the Torah will be resolute and unshakeable.
7. National Unity as a Bridge to Science, Wisdom, and Practical Pursuits
When this revival takes place and the Torah reclaims its natural standing within the nation, general wisdom—science, art, and worldly education—will also flourish in Israel. The observant will no longer fear secular studies and the sciences.
Indeed, the historical insularity and resistance of the traditional community toward the Enlightenment did not stem from an intrinsic hostility to science, but from the imperative to shield the core of the nation's existence: the preservation of Torah and faith. In the past, lacking a healthy, natural national ground for observance, faith rested solely on an abstract, delicate sacred sentiment that was acutely vulnerable to the shifting winds of the era. Left with no alternative, the nation was forced to retreat, renounce practical professions and beneficial wisdom, and settle for an almost miraculous spiritual survival solely to avoid forfeiting its most precious treasure.
However, once the national spirit establishes itself as a natural anchor tied directly to the Torah, and once the estranged return to practical participation in Jewish life, we will have confidence in our children. We will know that regardless of the sciences they pursue, the careers they develop, or the social circles they enter, they will remain loyal to the Torah of Israel and its values. The barrier will then fall away: varied talents will thrive, contributing to all humanity and elevating our nation's standing, with Torah and science dwelling together in absolute harmony.
8. The Universal and Humanistic Dimension of the Torah
Understanding Judaism's role requires recognizing its ultimate objective regarding all humanity: the aspiration for world peace and viewing the entire human race as a single family, where every individual cares for and respects their neighbor without distinction of race or nationality.
Such moral development cannot take place without a clear recognition of the Creator's unity and Providence. Sound reason dictates that without the fear of Heaven, selfish human impulses will always prevail, with every individual or faction seeking to amass all good exclusively for themselves. Natural morality and ethical intuition are too frail to stand unaided amid the turbulent struggle for existence; confronted with lust, necessity, and pressure, human morality quickly bends.
The sole enduring foundation for morality is the knowledge that there is one Creator and Governor over all, that one Father created us, and that His will is for the good of all His creations. Only this awareness will dismantle the fear and hostility that drive nations to arm themselves with destructive weaponry and poison the ethical landscape. Bringing humanity to this realization of God and His Providence is the universal mission of the people of Israel.
9. Internal Peace First, Followed by Universal Repair
Yet the path ahead remains long. The concept of God's unity and Providence has not yet taken deep root in humanity because it has not yet fully matured even within ourselves. Before we can influence the world, we must engrave peace—which is the very name of the Holy One, blessed be He—upon our own banner, as brothers born of one Father. Only when the people of Israel realize their calling within themselves as a living, unified nation will the light of faith radiate outward to all nations.
This is the ultimate purpose of all Torah commandments and their details: to cultivate within us national sentiment and authentic brotherly love. This is why the Torah insists so rigorously on uniformity in practical lifestyle, as it is this shared practice that fosters emotional closeness, shared values, and genuine love.
10. Observance as a Framework for Family Identification Within the Nation
When we comprehend the needs of our national spirit, we realize how precious the practical commandments truly are: they generate profound love between all segments of the nation as members of a single family, rather than a superficial tolerance born of mere obligation.
How can we genuinely feel like brothers if we do not share a common lifestyle and shared values? Moral and practical partnership constitutes the strongest wellspring of mutual affection. Therefore, we must accustom ourselves and the public to walk in the path of Torah—for the Torah is the "strength" that brings peace ("The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace").
This internal peace, constructed from the spirit of Israel and practical solidarity, is the first step. Only after this fraternity is realized among us in an exemplary manner will the nations take notice, allowing the blessing of peace to rest upon the entire world. Our purpose is to preserve our national uniqueness, anchored in faith and Torah observance, and through it to foster an abundance of peace and brotherhood.
11. Practical Habit Is Not Enough: Connecting to the Moral Spirit of the Commandments
For the commandments to be observed naturally rather than as an external imposition, our duty in this generation—an educated, critical generation drawn to the tangible and the rational—is to elucidate the depth, value, and sublime spirit of Judaism in a manner that resonates with intellect and human nature.
In the past, when observance was taken for granted by virtue of routine and simple faith, it was enough to point out the beauty and sanctity of the deeds. No one questioned why these specific actions were necessary for morality, because the deeds were already ingrained in the soul. But in our era, when many have grown up without a Torah education and have consequently lost both the habit and the natural affinity for the commandments, generalized sermons on morality and justice will not suffice; abstract discourse will not return them to a way of life they perceive as foreign.
Our deepest aspiration is to restore our people to the original Jewish way of life flowing from the wellspring of the Torah. To accomplish this, we must build the structure from its foundation: demonstrating how the commandments are planted in the nature of the soul and the most fundamental national needs, and upon this natural foundation, re-establishing the lofty moral and spiritual edifice of the Torah of Israel.
