The meaning of the word tefillah seems, on the face of it, unclear. On the one hand, the word tefillah is understood as a supplication, as in pilelti, in the language of the posuk (Bereishis 48:11), “Re’oh fonecho lo filelti”—filelti meaning I hoped, I anticipated. On the other hand, the word is interpreted like (Shemos 21:22) “Venasan biflilim” (he shall pay as the judges determine), as the Gemara in Sanhedrin expounds on the posuk, “Vaya’amod Pinchos vayfalel vate’otzar hamageifah”: “And Rebbi Elozor said, it does not say vayispalel, but rather vayfalel—this teaches that he made pelilos (arguments of adjudication) with his Kono (Creator); he came and cast them down before the Mokom, saying before Him: ‘Ribono shel Olam, on account of these should twenty-four thousand fall from Yisroel?’” That is to say, it is like “venasan biflilim”—these are a kind of claims that are argued in a beis din. A person can stand in tefillah and put forth arguments; the mispallel even has a right to plead claims before the Borei Olam.
These claims are in the manner of the tefillos that we also daven, such as when a person stands before the Borei Olam and says to Him: “Mah betza bedomi beridti el shachas, hayodcho ofor hayagid amitecho” (What gain is there in my blood, in my going down to the pit? Shall the dust praise You? Shall it declare Your truth?). There is reason for such words: a person comes and says before the Borei Olam, “Mah betza”—just as Yehudah said to his brothers, “Mah betza ki naharog es ochinu vechisinu es domo, lechu venimkerenu layishme’eilim” (What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites). The intention in “mah betza” is: what profit will we have? And likewise, a person stands and says before the Borei Olam, “Mah betza bedomi beridti el shachas”—what profit will You have if You take my life? Why is it worthwhile for You to take me from the world? What benefit will accrue to You from this? “Hayodcho ofor hayagid amitecho”—it is more worthwhile for You to leave me alive so that I may thank You and declare Your truth, for surely dust will neither praise You nor declare Your truth! So too do we find with Avrohom Avinu, when he stood and prayed before the Borei Olam, saying: “Choliloh lecho, hashofeit kol ho’oretz lo ya’aseh mishpot” (Far be it from You! Shall the Judge of all the earth not do justice?). These matters are called pelilim; these are a kind of arguments being pleaded: It is more just, it is more worthwhile, it is more fitting that He act in this way and not that way.
Seemingly, what kind of approach to the Borei Olam is this? Are we here to teach Him how to run the world, what is worthwhile for Him to do? Surely this is the meaning of the words “mah betza”—what will You get out of this, what will come of it for You? And primarily, we must understand: behold, tefillah is called by this very term, from the language of pelilim, that is its name; yet seemingly, it would have been more fitting to name tefillah after an expression of petition, an expression of mercy, as indeed tefillah is always referred to in the Gemara in Aramaic as “ba’ei rachamei”—meaning, seeking mercy. In Lashon Hakodesh, tefillah is named after those very words of contention—the arguments maintaining that this outcome is advantageous, making pelilos with one’s Kono, and in the language of venasan biflilim. And this is baffling: surely this is not the definition of the concept! The concept of tefillah is something else—it is supplication; a person requests something, pleads for his life, ba’ei rachamei. One must understand the true essence of tefillah.
The Very Stance in Tefillah Is the Revelation of the Middah of Malchus
Tefillah always, at every time, in every circumstance, and in every place, relates to the middah known as Malchus. Every person who prays stands before the Melech; therefore, the protocols of honor in tefillah are also like one standing before a king. Thus, one must stand in awe, with koved rosh (gravity of mind), with derech eretz, and pray as one standing before a king. This middah of His Malchus Yisborach is a different middah from the middah of Rachamim; on the contrary, “Melech bemishpot ya’amid eretz” (A king by justice establishes the land)—a king conducts matters with din (strict judgment). And behold, in tefillah we ask for the exact opposite: we ask Him to arise from the Throne of Din and sit upon the Throne of Rachamim; we ask solely for rachamim! Why, then, does tefillah relate specifically to Malchus? In every aspect—the standing, the bowing, and the phrasing of the words—everything is directed toward the Melech. We find no such thing regarding other mitzvos, where they do not relate specifically to this middah; whereas tefillah pertains distinctively to this middah—the standing in tefillah and addressing Him, Yisborach, pertains to the middah of Malchus.
The explanation of the matter is that the very possibility of our being able to turn to Him at all, to stand and to speak, is itself a product of the middah of Malchus. Were it not for this, there would be no possibility whatsoever to stand before Him and speak; we have no pitchon peh (standing to speak) before Him except by virtue of the middah of Malchus. The middah of Malchus dictates that a king must interact, in some manner, with those over whom his kingdom rests. This partnership—this togetherness of the king with those upon whom his sovereignty rests—that very togetherness enables the matter of tefillah, enables turning to Him, and enables the very act of speaking to Him. We are able to say something to Him because this is inherent to the order of Malchus; such are the orders of Malchus. Malchus is of such a nature that the partnership of the king together with his subjects creates the kingdom. If the king were completely removed from them and there were no possibility of connection between the king and those over whom his sovereignty rests, no kingdom would be formed; the fact that they are together is what creates Malchus.
It turns out, then, that anyone standing in tefillah before Him, Yisborach, by the very fact that he petitions for his life, stands and requests something for himself, fulfills the order of Malchus simultaneously, minei uvei (inherently within it). In the very fact that a person stands before Him and asks on his own behalf that the Borei do something for him, that very request that he makes for himself is itself the fulfillment of the middah of Malchus; through this very request, the middah of Malchus is actualized.
If it entered our minds that it is impossible to ask and have the request actually fulfilled—if we thought that the request is merely an empty gesture—the middah of Malchus would not be revealed. The order of Malchus certainly requires that the request be one that will be fulfilled, a request where the One being petitioned hears it and fulfills it. For this reason, every tefillah contains within it a certain element of a legitimate claim (tvi'ah). That is to say: certainly, when a person stands to daven, the meaning of his standing to pray is that he stands and pleads for his life, he stands and entreats and requests that the thing be done; but at the foundation of the matter lies the principle that it is rightly due that the request be fulfilled. And why? Because this request itself sustains the very middah of Malchus, and the fulfillment of the middah of Malchus is realized when the Borei hears my request and fulfills it. It emerges that embedded within the very petition of tefillah is the reality that it is fitting that it should certainly be so.
Certainly, the tefillah in itself is supplications (tachanunim); the essence of the tefillah is supplications alone. But the very fact that there exists the possibility for a person to stand and plead before the Borei Olam sustains that very middah of Malchus, which is the foundation of the entire world. It follows that every tefillah—a proper tefillah, of course—carries within it an aspect that, essentially, it is fitting that You fulfill what I ask so that Your Malchus may be sustained, so that the middah of Malchus may be revealed through this tefillah. Any tefillah that goes unanswered contains no revelation of the middah of Malchus; naturally, there is far greater revelation of the middah of Malchus in every request that is answered. Thus, here the orders of Malchus are actualized and revealed in the world.
Avodah Tzorech Govoha – Here Lies the Revelation of Melech and Am
The Rishonim mention in several places the reciprocity present in tefillah; many of the holy giants elaborated on this, and the matter is well known. As the Ramban writes regarding avodah tzorech Govoha (an act of service that addresses a Divine need, as it were; see Ramban, Shemos 29:46), and as the Nefesh HaChaim elaborates in several places in Sha'ar Beis. The service with which we serve the Borei Olam contains an element of tzorech Govoha: we make requests for ourselves, but in doing so there is something of tzorech Govoha—meaning, something beyond ourselves is being fulfilled here. We are speaking of a true tefillah, praying in earnest: a person who knows he is standing before the Melech Malchei HaMelochim and stands and pleads before Him for his soul—whether it is a petition for refuah, a petition for slichah, or a petition for da'as, whatever it may be—a person standing before the Melech and requesting for his life, his needs, and his own affairs, thereby actualizes the affairs of Malchus, of the middah of Malchus, minei uvei, within that very request that he makes for himself.
Wherever the orders of Malchus dictate that it is possible to turn to that Melech and make a request, naturally that petition carries an entirely different authority: I do not come here on my own authority; I do not come to impose or disturb; rather, I come by virtue of the order of Malchus itself! The orders of Malchus themselves dictate that I may ask, and the orders of Malchus themselves will be fulfilled through the granting of my request. Herein lies that tzorech Govoha present in tefillah.
To the discerning observer: in every stance where we stand before Him, we stand face-to-face (lenochech). And every face-to-face encounter means that just as we stand before Him and speak, so too that tefillah is realized such that He stands before us and listens; that is the very act of tefillah. The act of tefillah—wherein we stand before Him, speak before Him, plead before Him, petition Him, and bow down to Him—that standing before Him necessitates the reality that this is a mutual presence, a presence from both sides: “Shifchi chamayim libeich nochech pnei Hashem” (Pour out your heart like water before the presence of Hashem). That is to say, when we stand before Him, just as our face is turned toward Him, so too His face is turned toward us. That very act of tefillah sets our face before Him and His face before us; we direct ourselves toward Him, and He directs Himself toward us. In this tefillah itself, there is the realization of the middah of Malchus upon which the world is established. That very union of upper and lower realms, that joining together of shared presence, is realized solely within the middah of Malchus. This is the one and only middah whose existence requires both Melech and am—meaning, a sovereign and subjects, a king and citizens, those over whom sovereignty rests; this is the togetherness of the king and those over whom the sovereignty rests.
This is the one and only middah that requires this; all other midos are qualities unto themselves. Of course, the middah of Chesed is not realized in practice without actual beneficence bestowed upon someone, and likewise with the other midos; yet the middah as a middah exists in its own right. However, this middah called Malchus, this reality called His sovereignty, requires the being together of the Melech and the am. Here, in this middah, its very essence is the union; it is never concluded from one side alone. It exists solely from both sides together—the side of those who crown the King, and the side of the One Who reigns. The Melech and the am together constitute the Malchus.
In our conceptual framework, there is no Malchus from one side alone. That is, we know that “Adon Olam asher molach beterem kol yetzir nivro” (Master of the Universe Who reigned before any creature was created), and we also know that “ve’acharei kichlos hakol levado yimloch noro” (and after all ceases to be, He alone shall reign in awe); but right now we exist in the state of “le’eis na’asah vecheftzo kol” (at the time when all was made according to His will), and then, “azai Melech shemo nikro” (then as King was His Name proclaimed). This is a conceptual realm of calling by Name, and in this realm, the middah of Malchus is realized solely through the inclusion of the entire world together.
In Rainfall, the Connection Between Heaven and Earth Is Revealed
Within the flow of influence between upper and lower realms, within the natural system, there is one conspicuous link, visibly seen and grasped as the connection between heaven and earth. We know and believe with complete emunah that everything is connected: a person does not stub his finger below unless it is proclaimed about him from Above (Chullin 7b); there is no blade of grass that does not have an angel standing over it and striking it, telling it to grow (see Bereishis Rabbah 10:6). Yet we do not see this in the ordinary order of the world; there can be people who deny this entirely with absolute heresy, and nevertheless they sow grass and it grows. The possibility to deny exists; the Borei Olam gave the possibility to deny. However, the system of rainfall is the one and only phenomenon in which absolute denial is impossible: there, the causal system does not hold; the causal system is unstable. Indeed, one can still deny, but that is a denial of a different sort; it is not complete denial.
The natural causal system is a mechanism driven by necessity; it is neither arbitrary nor volitional. But this system of rainfall—this is explicitly a volitional system; it is not fixed, it does not exist as an automatic certainty at all. Seemingly, this entire system of rainfall ought to have been a natural, fixed mechanism like everything else in the world; there is no earthly reason why there should be any fluctuation from time to time. All things operate on the same frequency, and there is no reason why events should not unfold identically as they did before. As for the secular, unbelieving world: since they do not perceive these truths, they gloss over them; and whenever they find any minor possibility to alter something—such as when there are clouds that do not yield rain and they find a way to induce precipitation—by virtue of that possibility, the world feels itself to be completely in control of this too, as though they have mastered this as well. But the Torah revealed to us that this matter lies outside the natural system! Even the honest-hearted among them know this: it is incomprehensible; it is outside the system; there is something utterly impossible here, an absolute anomaly. The world, nature, proceeds naturally along an orderly and structured causality down to the finest detail, and that same system of causes ought to operate in the exact same manner—nothing has changed from that perspective. If so, why does every single year look different? From the perspective of all natural causes and effects, the world should appear such that every day of the year resembles its counterpart; why does day differ from day? Is the sun hotter? Does the earth move closer to the sun? True, processes occur where human beings alter something physically—there is much smoke in the air—but the percentage that should change is minuscule; whereas here, we face a wild, entirely irregular system that cannot be brought under scrutiny, which is impossible to predict or grasp. The rest of the world does not behave like this at all!
An Irregular System of Rainfall Extricates from Avodah Zarah
Here, one cannot be a complete kofer. Complete denial exists where the preservation of the thing lies in human hands; man sees the mechanism revolving around the phenomenon: “Pen tisah eineicho hashomaymoh vera’iso es hashemesh ve’es hayarei’ach ve’es hakochovim etc.” (Lest you lift up your eyes to heaven and see the sun, the moon, and the stars...). An extraordinarily ordered system down to the minute detail, without any deviation—such an ordered system is precisely what one must be cautioned against time and again: “pen tisah eineicho hashomaymoh”—this brings about avodah zarah; this brings about heresy. You see an enormous, perfectly ordered mechanism, and there is the possibility to grasp that this system is closed and complete within itself, carrying within itself all the causes of its existence. That is avodah zarah! But when we see a system in which we understand nothing, over which we have no comprehension, a system that appears explicitly volitional, operating according to will—this is the very system that will bring us back. Certainly, this too is incomprehensible, for the Divine Will itself is certainly incomprehensible; it is not our will. But the fact that it is incomprehensible compels us. Just as one must issue a warning against something that is very comprehensible—“pen tisah eineicho hashomaymoh etc. venidachto vehishtachaviso” (lest you be drawn away and worship them), so that it should not, chas vesholom, compel the opposite—here, this system is the reverse: from it we are meant to return. As is stated in Yirmiyahu (14:22): “Hayesh behavlei hagoyim magshimim” (Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain?)—is there anyone among all the vanities of the nations to whom you can turn and ask for rain? When Eliyahu HaNavi wished to eliminate the idolaters, the worshipers of the Baal, we find that he swore in the Name of Hashem (Melachim I 17:1): “Chai Hashem Elokei Yisroel asher omadti lefonov im yihyeh hashanim ha’eileh tal umotor ki im lefi devori” (As Hashem, the G-d of Israel, lives, before Whom I have stood, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word)—only if I speak will there be rain.
Any conception of an entity that carries within itself the entirety of its existence, its future, all that it is—any such conception is a root that bears avodah zarah, a root that bears gall and wormwood (rosh vela'anah). Any such thing can be perceived as detached: having an independent existence, being a thing unto itself. Whereas wherever we find a dependent entity, a contingent reality, an entity whose existence is not minei uvei (self-contained), which does not carry all its sustenance within itself, but rather its existence connects and requires something outside of itself—wherever you find such a connection, there you find the exact opposite: there is the place where one finds connection rather than detachment. Rainfall is the only thing in the world whose physical aspect, whose physical existence, is contingent upon tefillah. Here lies the point of connection, as it were, between us and Him.
Kabalas Ol Mitzvos – The Realization That This Is Our Very Existence
In Krias Shema, we accept upon ourselves the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven (ol Malchus Shomayim) and the yoke of the commandments (ol mitzvos). The acceptance of the yoke of mitzvos occurs twice every day, and thus is it recited; thus do we accept upon ourselves the yoke of mitzvos, the yoke of the sovereignty of mitzvos: “Vehoyoh im shomo’a tishme’u el mitzvosai asher anochi metzaveh eschem hayom le’ahavah es Hashem Elokeichem ule’ovdo etc.” (And it shall come to pass, if you diligently hearken to My commandments which I command you this day, to love Hashem your G-d and to serve Him...). And then, what will happen? “Venosati metar artzechem be’ito yoreh umalkosh ve’osafto etc.” (Then I will give the rain of your land in its season, the first rain and the last rain, that you may gather in...). And further on it says: “Hishameru lachem pen yifteh levavchem vesartem va’avadtem elohim acheirim” (Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods), and then, “Ve’otzar es hashomayim velo yihyeh motor veho’adomah lo sitein es yevulah etc.” (And He will shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and the ground will not yield its fruit...). This is the completion of kabalas ol Malchus Shomayim; everything hinges upon this: whether there will be rain or there will not be rain! In this manner do we accept upon ourselves the yoke of His mitzvos.
Seemingly, this is exceedingly strange: we do not fulfill mitzvos so that rain should fall upon us, nor do we flee from transgressions out of fear that there will be no rain! Certainly that is not the reason; we are not commanded on account of this, and that is not the rationale for serving Him, Yisborach. Anyone who acts on this basis is surely performing the mitzvos not for their own sake (shelo lishmah). If so, why was this parshah chosen? Why do we accept the yoke of mitzvos in this manner? For we are seemingly doing the opposite here! Here it states that if you listen, then “venosati metar artzechem be’ito”, and if, chas vesholom, you do not listen—“pen yifteh levavchem vesartem”—then “ve’otzar es hashomayim velo yihyeh motor veho’adomah lo sitein es yevulah”. That is to say: if you do this, it will be profitable for you, and if you do that, it will not be profitable for you! This is explicitly not an acceptance of a yoke (kabalas ol); we are expressing here what is worthwhile and what is not worthwhile! When we accept the yoke of mitzvos here, we seem to be stating how advantageous it is to observe the mitzvos. If so, why is this called accepting the yoke of mitzvos, as we learned in Berachos: “In order that he first accept upon himself the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven, and afterward accept upon himself the yoke of the commandments”? What is the meaning of this?
The acceptance of the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven is stated in “Ve’ohavto es Hashem Elokecho bechol levovcho uvchol nafshecho uvchol me’odecho” (And you shall love Hashem your G-d with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might). There it says: give up your very life (mesiras nefesh) for His love! Mesiras nefesh—that is indeed an acceptance of a yoke. But an acceptance based on whether you will gain or lose is not an acceptance of a yoke; here a transaction is being proposed, a good investment: if you do mitzvos, you will receive rain, and if you commit sins, then the reverse—you and your beasts will have nothing to eat, the earth will not yield its produce. Is this how we accept the yoke of mitzvos? Is this kabalas ol mitzvos? What kind of acceptance of the yoke of mitzvos is being spoken to us here?
The explanation of the matter: here it is not a question of worthwhile versus not worthwhile; the matter is self-evident. Indeed, kabalas ol mitzvos means: understanding mitzvos as the very thing upon which existence itself is contingent! That is kabalas ol mitzvos; there is no existence in any other way! Just as the acceptance of the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven means that if, chas vesholom, there is anything opposed to the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven we are obligated to give up our lives, so too the acceptance of the yoke of mitzvos means that if we deviate from the fulfillment of mitzvos, we are thereby destroying our own existence (me’abdim es atzmeinu loda'as). Destruction of existence is written here; a fundamentally different perception of existence is written here! It is a perception of existence that says: whoever fulfills the mitzvos exists, and if we do not fulfill the mitzvos, we do not exist; we have no existence. You have no greater kabalas ol than this! True kabalas ol is when a person tethers and binds his very existence to this matter.
When we say “im shomo’a tishme’u etc. venosati metar artzechem be’ito”, the meaning is: thus are these matters intertwined—namely, existence itself, that very existence is contingent upon this, dependent upon this. “Im shomo’a tishme’u el mitzvosai” speaks of all the mitzvos collectively: “le’ahavah es Hashem Elokeichem ule’ovdo bechol levavchem”, and on this posuk the Gemara in Maseches Ta'anis (2a) states: “Which is the service of the heart? Say: this is tefillah.” That is: if “vehoyoh im shomo’a tishme’u el mitzvosai”, “le’ahavah es Hashem Elokeichem”, and also “ule’ovdo bechol levavchem”—meaning tefillah as well—only then, what follows is “venosati metar artzechem be’ito”.
This is the meaning of the matter; this is what they taught us here. Man was created from such an action that that very action, which was the root of his creation, his very existence, the very root of his being—that action itself, from his creation onward, is dependent upon tefillah. From the moment man was created, that very element standing at the root of his existence is dependent upon tefillah: if he prays, it will come to be—meaning, he himself will exist if he prays.
What Is the Combination of Praise and Petition in the Order of Tefillah?
Tefillah, as it stands, also includes words of praise and adoration beforehand—the ordering of the praise of the Mokom, as stated in Berachos (32a): “A person should always arrange the praise of the Mokom and afterward pray.” These are the praises that we recite: HaGadol, HaGibor, veHaNorah, Keil Elyon, and the like; Atoh gibor le’olam Hashem, and there we recount the entire order of the world: mechalkeil chaim, mechayei meisim, someich noflim, rofei cholim, matir asurim—everything. Avos, Gevuros, and Kedushas Hashem—these are the first three brachos of the tefillah, which constitute the arrangement of the praise of the Mokom. Afterward come all the middle brachos, which are all petitions for personal needs; at the conclusion we return to giving thanks and praise. This is the order of tefillah.
And behold, one must understand how these three things all combine into a single unit. The petition for personal needs we understand: that is how the purpose of tefillah is perceived by us—as requesting needs; that is what one needs to do in tefillah, to ask. There is also room to give thanks. But why must they be joined together? Why must this be a single unit—namely, both arranging His praise, petitioning for needs, and giving thanks? Why does the order of tefillah encompass everything, all matters of tefillah combined? If we view the purpose of tefillah merely as an awakening of mercy (le’orer rachamei), this is incomprehensible: one should simply make the request; why are all these introductions and everything we say necessary? When Moshe Rabbeinu wished to awaken mercy upon Miriam, he said: “Keil na refa na lah” (O G-d, please heal her, please)—that is a petition to awaken mercy. Such a prayer certainly exists as well; but what is the meaning of an established order of tefillah that obligates and includes both arranging the praise of the Mokom, thanksgiving, and the petition for needs joining into this entire system as one?
If petitioning for needs were perceived not as part of the order of Malchus, but merely as an awakening of mercy, it would certainly be difficult to grasp the connection between all these things: in what way is all of this a single unit? Why is it forbidden to interrupt between one part and the next? Surely these are two separate matters: arranging the praise of the Mokom would be an affair unto itself! Yet we see that this section known as arranging the praise of the Mokom is also called by the name tefillah. What manner of tefillah is there in arranging the praise of the Mokom?
Indeed, the matter is truly clear. Since the system is not merely a petition for needs, but an expression of the true orders of Malchus, the essence of tefillah is to come before the Melech. Consequently, when coming before the Melech, this is the proper order: the order is to arrange His praise first, and afterward comes the petition for needs, which is likewise part of the order of Malchus. The entire purpose of tefillah is the revelation and expression of the matter of Malchus, and the matter of Malchus necessarily encompasses all these elements. Such is the protocol of Malchus: to approach Him, to stand before Him, and to petition for ourselves. Indeed, the ultimate purpose does not end with awakening mercy, with asking; rather, the ultimate purpose is the revelation of the middah of Malchus. In this manner, we sustain the middah of Malchus. Therefore, as stated, this is called tefillah; therefore, the praises, the thanksgiving, and all remaining elements are combined into it—everything that joins into tefillah.
Dovid HaMelech, Who Reveals the Middah of Malchus, Says of Himself: "Va'ani Tefillah"
We know that “Kol mah shebarah Hakodosh Boruch Hu be’olomo lo bera’o elah lichvodo” (Everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He created solely for His glory; Avos 6:11)—meaning, all of creation was created to reveal this very thing: to reveal His glory, to reveal His Malchus. This is the foundation upon which all of creation stands; everything must proclaim His Malchus. The one who revealed the middah of Malchus in the world in a full and complete manner was Dovid HaMelech. He is called in the language of the Sages the Merkavah (chariot) for the middah of Malchus; he is the one who revealed the Kingdom of Heaven fully in the world. Therefore he was chosen as king, and he is the one who lives and endures—he is the King of Israel forever and he is Melech HaMoshiach; he is the one whose kingship, whose kingdom of Israel, was granted to him for his generations. He sat upon the throne of Hashem; the meaning of this is that he did not reveal his own kingship, but rather revealed the Kingdom of Heaven in the world. He was a king who revealed the middah of Malchus in the world. Dovid HaMelech is the one who said of himself: “Va’ani tefillah”, in the language of the posuk in Tehillim: “Tachas ahavasi yistenuni va’ani tefillah” (In return for my love they accuse me, but I am prayer). Meaning, if he wished to define himself—who he was—Dovid HaMelech speaks of himself and says, “Ani tefillah” (I am prayer). He is the one who composed the Sefer Tehillim; he is the one who composed all the tefillos, all the praises, the Ne’im Zmiros Yisroel (Sweet Singer of Israel)—and he states what he is; he defines himself: “Va’ani tefillah”.
After the Sin of Odom HaRishon, Dovid HaMelech Is Needed
Odom HaRishon sinned, and the decree of death was issued upon him. As Chazal revealed to us, he was meant to die at the end of a thousand years; he sinned on his first day and was supposed to live a thousand years. But his final seventy years he gave to Dovid HaMelech, because he foresaw that Dovid HaMelech had no place in the world. Dovid HaMelech, fundamentally, had no place in the world at all—he was only meant to live for three hours. Odom HaRishon gave seventy years of his own years to Dovid HaMelech so that he would live; so say Chazal. The meaning of this is: had Odom HaRishon not sinned, Dovid HaMelech would not have needed to come into the world. The tefillah of Dovid HaMelech would not have been necessary; there would have been no need to bring Dovid HaMelech, and consequently no need to bring Melech HaMoshiach, for the world would not have become corrupted at all. Odom HaRishon would have sufficed; he would have been in Gan Eden, face-to-face with the Shechinah. But after he sinned, the tefillah of Dovid HaMelech was required in order to bring the world to its tikkun (rectification).
The Revelation of Malchus in Tefillah Brings Down the Shefa
We have learned, then, that there is nothing in the world that reveals His glory, His middah of Malchus, more prominently than tefillah reveals it. In all of the mitzvos, there is no subject of the honor of Malchus such as the honor of Malchus that is revealed in tefillah. Standing in tefillah, as written in the Gemara, in the Rambam, in the Shulchan Aruch, requires standing ke’avdo kamei mareih—like a servant before his master, like one standing before a king. That is the very posture of standing in tefillah, and the recitation of tefillah is something uttered before the Melech. There is nothing in all the mitzvos that is accompanied so prominently by the honor of Malchus. We learn Torah, we perform mitzvos; yet in all these matters, the honor of Malchus is revealed in them only to the extent that tefillah joins with them—only to the extent that the matter is part of tefillah is the honor of Malchus revealed.
We must know this clearly: therefore, tefillah is the one and only vehicle through which shefa (Divine bounty) truly reaches us. Aside from the fact that we make requests, it is through tefillah that shefa reaches us because tefillah fundamentally sustains the connection between us and Him. This is explicitly written; there is a posuk repeated in the Torah, the Nevi'im, and the Kesuvim, which states: “Ozi vezimras Koh vayhi li lishu'ah” (Hashem is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation). Meaning: when a person utters song and praise before the Borei Olam, through this as well he will have salvation! That is, the reality of salvation does not depend solely upon having requested the thing. There is such a Divine conduct that when a person stands to daven, he is already answered: “Terem yikro’u va’ani e’eneh” (Before they call, I will answer). When he stands to daven, before he has even asked, the concept of Shomei’a Tefillah does not yet apply because he has not yet prayed; but he has already fulfilled the middah of Malchus—he positioned himself to pray, and that in itself is sufficient.
The Gemara in Ta'anis (24b) relates concerning Rav Yehudah that when he stepped down before the teivah during a drought: vechi hovah shalif chad mesonoh osi mitroh—when he removed one shoe in order to descend before the teivah and stand in prayer, rain immediately fell. That is to say, removing the shoe was an act of submission, as it were, before the Borei Olam; he had not yet prayed, nor had he even removed both shoes, and by that alone rain already descended!
This is that very connection that exists between us and Him: in tefillah we are truly together. When we stand before Him in tefillah we are together—we are a King and His people. Then, in such a state, Malchus is revealed upon us; we bear the middah of Malchus. And it is clear that all the shefa present in this middah belongs entirely to us, because we affiliate ourselves with this middah.
Man Must Exist in a State of Tefillah
We must know this: this system known as rain—that system which is the bringing down of shefa from Above to below—is essentially nothing other than the connection between upper and lower realms. Rainfall is the link between that which is above and that which is below. There is no rain generated solely from the ordered system below—by no means whatsoever! It does not exist; it could never be; it is not found here. It exists solely within the framework of connection to Above: when there is tefillah it exists, and when there is no tefillah it is absent.
Man, when he was created, was created out of this connection. The very creation of man is a bond between upper and lower realms; therefore, for the purpose of man’s creation, rain fell even without tefillah, because man himself is the bond between upper and lower realms. From his creation onward, the sustaining of this connection is through tefillah. Here, when man prays, there is connection; and when he, chas vesholom, ceases to pray, the connection is severed.
We know well, and experience demonstrates this at every turn: wherever creation perceives itself as stronger, as more self-sustaining, as organized in such a way that it has no fear—wherever creation perceives itself, whether in medicine or in other marvels of technology, as having total control—man is shown that one must pray. The moment they dared to presume that there is total control over health, illnesses were revealed such that for decades the greatest minds in the world, who invented cures for other diseases, encounter an impenetrable wall. At their disposal stands an influx of money beyond estimation, without limit and without end, alongside research capabilities and brilliant minds—yet decades have passed, and they have not advanced even the smallest fraction of a step. The finest among them, the honest-hearted among them, admit this openly; and whoever does not admit this is considered, even among them, to be arrogant. They arrive only at techniques that help manage or improve, this possibility or that. The Borei Olam always leaves a corner in the world where one must pray. The moment a person extricates himself from tefillah, it will be brought upon him against his will. A person must know that he is a praying being; he was created as a mispallel. His very creation was from such a reality that is essentially something brought about through tefillah; he is a mispallel by the very nature of his creation. And when a person ceases to pray, he will be compelled to pray. Whoever does not pray over his very existence will, chas vesholom, be forced to pray in a time of distress. Tefillah is indispensable to existence itself; this is the constant Divine conduct. This matter is the only thing conspicuous in providence, conspicuous within nature: always, man must pray. Whoever fails to grasp that tefillah is essential to his very existence—if he does not pray, chas vesholom, he will be made to pray; this will be shown to him.
This is the middah of the Borei Olam; thus does He guide the world. He created the world in order that they should pray; odom mimakom kaporoso nivro (man was created from the place of his atonement)—man was created from something that is his tefillah, from something he can reach only through tefillah. He was created to be a mispallel. Man must pray over his very creation, over his very existence; his existence itself depends upon tefillah.
This matter—the regular, ordered tefillah—has been eroded to the dust. Exceptional tefillos we sometimes daven with emotion; but the tefillah that is korbani lachmi—that is the tefillah that sustains the world, the bread that sustains the world—that tefillah we fail to pray.
We must know that it is this tefillah that sustains us, and through it we are privileged to stand before Him and reveal His Malchus.
