Adam Mim’kom Kaporoso Nivra
The Rambam writes in Hilchos Beis HaBechirah (2:1): “The place of the mizbei’ach is exceedingly precise, and it may never be shifted from its place, as it says: ‘Zeh mizbei’ach l’olah l’Yisroel...’ (This is the altar for burnt offerings for Israel).” That is to say, the site of the mizbei’ach is exact, and it must be specifically here; this distinct location is the place of the mizbei’ach, for it was designated here with precision.
In Halachah 2, the Rambam writes: “And there is a universal tradition that the place where Dovid and Shlomo built the altar on the threshing floor of Aravnah is the very place where Avrohom built the altar and bound Yitzchok upon it; it is the place where Noach built [an altar] when he emerged from the teivah; it is the altar upon which Kayin and Hevel offered; and upon it Adam HaRishon brought a korban when he was created [meaning, certainly the Rambam does not mean he offered before he was created, but that immediately upon being created he offered]—and from there he was created.”
The Rambam concludes: “The Sages stated: ‘Adam mim’kom kaporoso nivra’ (Man was created from the place of his atonement).” Rashi likewise cites this on the posuk (Bereishis 2:7): “Vayitzer Hashem Elokim es ha’adam afar min ha’adamah” (And the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground), stating: “Another explanation: He took his dust from the place of which it is said, ‘Mizbach adamah ta’aseh li’ (An altar of earth you shall make for Me). [Hashem] said: Would that he may have atonement and be able to endure.” That is, he was created from the very place where he must attain kaporah.
The meaning of this requires clarification: Why did man need to be created from that exact place which is the mizbei’ach, where he must achieve atonement? Indeed, we find a parallel concept to this, as we shall explain.
Rain Falls When There Is a Person Who Davens
The posuk states (Bereishis 2:5): “V’chol si’ach hasadeh terem yihyeh va’aretz v’chol eisev hasadeh terem yitzmach, ki lo himtir Hashem Elokim al ha’aretz v’adam ayin la’avod es ha’adamah” (Now no shrub of the field was yet on the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprouted, for Hashem Elokim had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground).
When the creation of the world was completed, the shrubs of the field were not yet on the earth and the herbs had not sprouted. Rashi explains: “And on the third day, where it is written ‘Vatotzei ha’aretz’ (And the earth brought forth), they stood at the opening of the soil until the sixth day. ‘Ki lo himtir’—because it had not rained, they could not grow. And what was the reason He did not bring rain? ‘L’fi she’adam ayin la’avod es ha’adamah’—because there was no man to work the ground and recognize the goodness of the rain. When Adam arrived and understood that it was a necessity for the world, he prayed for it, and it descended, and the trees and grasses sprouted.”
This means that the very first tefillah took place when Adam was created: he recognized the need for rain, prayed for it, and as a result, rain fell. Prior to there being a man to daven for rain, no rain fell. That is to say, rain stands waiting for the tefillah of man. There is one distinct element in Creation that waits for human prayer: for rain to descend, human beings must daven; there must be a person who recognizes the goodness of rain and prays for it, and only then does it fall.
Man Was Created from the “Place” of His Tefillah
Further on, the posuk states: “V’eid ya’aleh min ha’aretz v’hishkah es kol p’nei ha’adamah” (A mist ascended from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground). Rashi comments: “Concerning the creation of Adam: He brought up the deep and watered the clouds to saturate the dust, and Adam was created.”
The posuk emphasizes an exception here. From the creation of man onward, rain would never fall unless there was a person praying for it. The descent of rain is directly tied to the presence of man and the extent of his tefillah; rain requires prayer, and when “v’adam ayin la’avod es ha’adamah”, there is no rain.
Yet all of this applies only from the creation of man onward. For the very creation of Adam himself, a different process took place: “V’eid ya’aleh min ha’aretz v’hishkah es kol p’nei ha’adamah.” At that moment, the Creator did it Himself, alone, without requiring tefillah. For Adam’s creation, it happened without prayer.
We learn from this that once man was created, existence became completely contingent upon tefillah, as stated: as long as man had not arrived, rain was impossible (“v’adam ayin la’avod es ha’adamah”). But regarding the creation of Adam himself, the very reality that would subsequently depend entirely on prayer was initiated by Hashem alone.
This parallels the Rambam's teaching: man was created from that place which is the place of his tefillah—a realm entirely dependent on his prayer. [While the mist is not a geographical “makom” (place), the principle is identical.] The watering of the earth via mist and rain depends on tefillah; it cannot exist in the world without it. For Adam’s creation, Hashem enacted this alone, establishing a reality whose ongoing existence and very root reverts back to being contingent upon prayer once man stands upon his feet.
Tefillah Is Existence Itself
This dynamic—the root of Creation without which it cannot survive, as the world cannot endure without that watering—is dependent on tefillah. Hence, tefillah is not merely an accessory to natural existence; it is existence itself.
Anyone who imagines that nature operates independently, that things endure naturally without needing tefillah, and that prayer is merely an add-on invoked when something is lacking, is mistaken. Natural existence itself requires tefillah.
The Mabbul Occurred Due to a Lack of Tefillah
Chazal teach this principle regarding the Mabbul (the Flood) as well, stating that the Flood came because of a lack of tefillah.
In Yeshayahu (54:9), it is written: “Ki mei Noach zos li asher nishbati mei’avor mei Noach od al ha’aretz” (For this is as the waters of Noach to Me, as I swore that the waters of Noach should no more pass over the earth). Why are the waters of the Flood called “mei Noach” (the waters of Noach)? He was the one spared from the Flood!
Chazal explain [in the Zohar] that because he did not daven for his generation to save them, the Flood is named after him: mei Noach. The Flood descended due to an absence of tefillah; because there was no prayer, the Mabbul occurred.
Hashem’s Malkhus Was Established Through the Mabbul
On the posuk “Hashem la’mabbul yashav, vayeshev Hashem melech l’olam” (Hashem sat enthroned at the Flood; Hashem sits enthroned as King forever), Chazal expound, in line with the plain meaning of the text, that through the Flood His malkhus (kingship) was settled and established forever.
The Flood introduced to the world the awareness that ruin is possible—that the world can be destroyed and lost. From that point on, existence carries within itself the understanding that it is conditional; it is neither obvious nor guaranteed. There is no solid, independent ground underfoot; the world's existence hangs in the balance.
Korboni Lachmi: Sustaining the Connection of Life
The Gemara in Berachos (26b) states: “Tefillos k’neged temidin tiknum” (The daily prayers were established corresponding to the temidin, the regular daily offerings).
Regarding the temidin, the posuk states: “Es korboni lachmi l’ishai rei’ach nichochi tishm’ru l’hakriv li b’mo’ado” (My offering, My bread for My fire offerings, a sweet savor unto Me, you shall observe to offer unto Me in its appointed season). The word “lachmi” (My bread) applied to the Creator—as explained by Chazal and the Rishonim—functions like “lechem l’vav enosh yis’ad” (bread sustains man’s heart): bread binds the soul within the body.
Every union of life requires sustenance. The connection of Hashem’s will to the worlds—that the worlds endure and live—requires “korboni lachmi.” From that point onward, the temidin, or the set tefillos established in their stead following the churban haBeis (destruction of the Temple), sustain the world. Just as a created being requires two meals a day to exist, so too, Chazal say, the temidin—one in the morning and one in the afternoon—maintain the existence of the universe.
The Rei’ach Nicho’ach Reveals Existence Through Tefillah
Following the Flood, the posuk states: “Vayarach Hashem es rei’ach hanicho’ach, vayomer Hashem el libo: lo osif l’kallel od es ha’adamah ba’avur ha’adam...” (And Hashem smelled the pleasing aroma, and Hashem said in His heart: I will not again curse the ground on man's account...).
The reason Hashem resolved never to bring another flood was that He smelled the rei’ach hanicho’ach—the pleasing aroma that ascended from the offerings brought on the altar. From then on, prayer would exist as the very foundation of reality.
Whoever recognizes that their existence is conditional and dependent—not self-sustaining, but hanging upon the will of Another—is a person who davens. Since the Mabbul, this prayer has been present in the world, embodying the sweet savor smelled from Noach’s offering.
Prayer is not merely an optional addition; it is an existential necessity. A person who does not daven, who views their existence as independent of prayer, loses the ground beneath their feet and ultimately brings corruption upon the world.
Tefillah Is Existence, Not an Ancillary Measure
In our flawed perception, we often view tefillah as an emergency measure—something reserved for hardship, distress, or personal need. While the halachah mandates prayer in times of distress (a positive d’Oraisa commandment derived from “V’ki savo’u milchamah... vaharei’osem bachatzotzros”, as codified by the Rambam and Ramban), structured prayer is often treated as mere routine, and spontaneous prayer as a tool only for times of trouble.
The realization that mere existence requires ongoing petition—that life is not an entitlement, and without asking for it, one does not possess it—is often distant from our minds.
Rain Reveals That Existence Depends on Tefillah
This concept is revealed most acutely through rain. Beyond the physical reality that life cannot endure without water descending from Above—the sustenance we request in “V’sein tal u’matar livracha al p’nei ha’adamah”—rain demonstrates that our survival depends on prayer.
Rain is the one phenomenon in the entire world that remains fundamentally unpredictable. Despite modern meteorological forecasts spanning a few days ahead, the fundamental process—how it begins and how it is generated—remains concealed beyond any rigid natural formula.
Attempts to explain weather patterns scientifically are retrospective assessments (b’di’eved). One year is drought-stricken and another is blessed with downpours, despite identical solar positioning and ocean volumes. The Creator left this single system dependent entirely on tefillah, operating outside deterministic natural cycles.
While the heavenly bodies, seasons, summer, and winter repeat with exact astronomical consistency, rain never repeats predictably. Its conduct each year is a chidush (a renewal).
The Almighty deliberately kept rain outside the deterministic order of nature so that humanity would realize we do not possess independent existence. Our lives are bound to a Source beyond our control—and that conscious dependence is the essence of tefillah.
