Berlinski’s words serve as a chilling post-mortem for the 20th century, but they are also a diagnostic tool for the 21st. When the vertical accountability to a Creator is severed, all that remains is the horizontal accountability to other men—which, as history proves, is easily manipulated, bullied, or bought.
The Idols of Power: From Washington to the IDF
We are witnessing a "secular sainthood" collapse under its own weight. First, a woman accused the late Shimon Peres of "misbehavior." Then another. This is the man lauded as the grandfather of modern Israel. As for his peer Yitzchak Rabin—a man whose own history is marred by the Altalena—we see a recurring pattern of Gilui Arayos (immorality) together with Shfichus Domim (bloodshed of the Altalena).
This is the "Rule of the Unwatched." Without the internal restraint of Yiras Shamayim (Fear of Heaven), power becomes a tool for exploitation. We see it in the halls of Washington D.C., the studios of Hollywood, and the command centers of the IDF. When men believe they are the ultimate authority, they treat the people around them as objects rather than souls.
The Crisis in the Ranks: 2024–2025 Statistics
The IDF, the most moral army in the world by secular standards, is struggling with a systemic breakdown of personal boundaries. According to a May 2025 report by the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee:
Skyrocketing Reports: The number of sexual abuse reports in the IDF reached 2,092 in 2024—a staggering increase from 668 a decade prior.
Military Circumstances: Roughly 73% of these incidents occurred during active military service, suggesting that when men are removed from their homes and social filters, the lack of an "Internal Judge" leads to disaster.
The Power Dynamic: A 2022 State Comptroller report found that one-third of female conscripts in the IDF had been sexually harassed in just one year.
Impunity: Despite thousands of reports, only 49 indictments were filed by the end of 2024. Without Yiras Shamayim, the system prioritizes "unit cohesion" over absolute morality.
We also have to take into account how many cases were not reported and add on all the consensual cases.
How can a Charedi parents be expected to send their sons and daughters into an environment where the most basic laws of Kedusha (holiness) and Tznius (modesty) are not just ignored, but statistically shattered? For a community that lives by the standard of "God is watching," entering a system where thousands of reports of abuse result in only a handful of indictments is not just a physical risk—it is a spiritual death sentence.
The Statistics of Betrayal
The data paints a bleak picture of the "liberated" secular heart. While a 2010 poll famously revealed that 85% of secular Israelis admitted to infidelity, the digital age has only accelerated the decay:
The Digital Escape: Gleeden, a "marital affairs" site specifically for women, reported a 250% surge in Israeli registrations during lockdowns. By 2025, digital infidelity has become a primary driver in over 50% of secular divorce proceedings.
The Contrast: In cities like Bnei Brak and Kiryat Sefer, these platforms are virtually non-existent. While the secular world views 24/7 cohabitation as a "prison" to break free from, the Torah world views it as a Mishkan (Sanctuary) to be built.
The "Avimelech" Principle
The sociological key to this chaos is found in the Torah. When Avimelech asks Avraham why he hid Sarah’s identity, Avraham’s answer is the ultimate indictment of secular "ethics":
"רק אין יראת א-להים במקום הזה והרגוני על דבר אשתי" "Only because there is no fear of God in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake." (Bereishit 20:11)
Abraham identified a structural flaw: without Yiras Hashem, "morality" is just a suggestion. Yet, despite this obvious moral decay, the secular world continues to attack the Haredi community with relentless vitriol. They label the God-fearing as "parasites" or "shirkers," while their own society crumbles under the weight of infidelity and harassment.
They attack the very people who preserve the moral compass of the nation because the presence of Yiras Shamayim is a silent rebuke to their own lack of restraint. It is easier to attack the man with the yarmulke than to admit that a society without God is a society without a bottom.
The "Temporary Insanity" of the Soul
Does the religious world have its own scandals? Yes. But there is a fundamental difference in the mechanics of the sin.
The Secular Sin: A feature of the system. If no one is watching and you can get away with it, there is no objective reason not to do it.
The Religious Sin: A bug in the system. The Gemara calls it a Ruach Shtus—a spirit of folly or temporary insanity. To sin, a believer must "turn off" their awareness of Hashem. At that moment, they aren't practicing religion; they are practicing secularism in a yarmulke.

אלילי הכוח: מוושינגטון ועד לצה"ל
אנו עדים לקריסתה של "קדושה חילונית" תחת כובד משקלה. תחילה, אישה האשימה את שמעון פרס המנוח ב"התנהגות בלתי הולמת". לאחר מכן הגיעה אחרת. זהו האיש שזכה לתשבחות כסבא של ישראל המודרנית. באשר לעמיתו יצחק רבין — אדם שההיסטוריה שלו מוכתמת בפרשת אלטלנה — אנו רואים דפוס חוזר של גילוי עריות יחד עם שפיכות דמים (של אלטלנה).
זהו "שלטון הלא-מפוקחים". ללא הריסון הפנימי של יראת שמיים, הכוח הופך לכלי לניצול. אנו רואים זאת במסדרונות השלטון בוושינגטון, באולפני הוליווד ובמרכזי הפיקוד של צה"ל. כשבני אדם מאמינים שהם הסמכות העליונה, הם מתייחסים לסובבים אותם כאל חפצים ולא כאל נשמות.

צה"ל, הצבא המוסרי ביותר בעולם לפי סטנדרטים חילוניים, נאבק בהתמוטטות מערכתית של גבולות אישיים. על פי דו"ח של ועדת החוץ והביטחון ממאי 2025:

כיצד ניתן לצפות מהורה חרדי לשלוח את בניו ובנותיו לסביבה שבה חוקי היסוד של קדושה וצניעות אינם רק זנוחים, אלא מרוסקים סטטיסטית? עבור קהילה שחיה על פי הסטנדרט של "שיוויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד", כניסה למערכת שבה אלפי דיווחים על ניצול מסתיימים בקומץ של כתבי אישום אינה רק סיכון פיזי — זוהי גזר דין מוות רוחני.
סטטיסטיקה של בגידה
הנתונים מציירים תמונה עגומה של הלב החילוני ה"משוחרר". בעוד שסקר מפורסם משנת 2010 חשף כי 85% מהישראלים החילונים הודו בבגידה, העידן הדיגיטלי רק האיץ את הריקבון:
המפלט הדיגיטלי: אתר Gleeden, אתר ל"ניהול רומנים" המיועד ספציפית לנשים, דיווח על זינוק של 250% בהרשמות של ישראליות בתקופת הסגרים. עד שנת 2025, בגידה דיגיטלית הפכה למניע העיקרי ביותר מ-50% מהליכי הגירושין במגזר החילוני.
הניגודיות: בערים כמו בני ברק וקריית ספר, פלטפורמות אלו כמעט ואינן קיימות. בעוד העולם החילוני רואה במגורים משותפים 24/7 "בית סוהר" שיש להשתחרר ממנו, עולם התורה רואה בכך "משכן" שיש לבנות.
עיקרון "אבימלך"
המפתח הסוציולוגי לכאוס הזה נמצא בתורה. כאשר אבימלך שואל את אברהם מדוע הסתיר את זהותה של שרה, תשובתו של אברהם היא כתב האישום האולטימטיבי נגד ה"אתיקה" החילונית:
"רַק אֵין יִרְאַת אֱ-לֹהִים בַּמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה וַהֲרָגוּנִי עַל דְּבַר אִשְׁתִּי" (בראשית כ', י"א).
אברהם זיהה פגם מבני: ללא יראת שמיים, ה"מוסר" הוא רק המלצה. ובכל זאת, למרות הריקבון המוסרי הברור הזה, העולם החילוני ממשיך לתקוף את הקהילה החרדית בארסיות בלתי פוסקת. הם מתייגים את יראי השם כ"פרזיטים" או "משתמטים", בזמן שחברתם שלהם מתפוררת תחת נטל הבגידות וההטרדות.
הם תוקפים דווקא את האנשים שמשמרים את המצפן המוסרי של האומה, משום שנוכחותה של יראת שמיים היא תוכחה שקטה לחוסר הריסון שלהם. קל יותר לתקוף את האיש עם הכיפה מאשר להודות שחברה ללא אלוהים היא חברה ללא תחתית.
ה"שטות" הזמנית של הנשמה
האם בעולם הדתי יש שערוריות משלו? כן. אך יש הבדל מהותי במכניקה של החטא:
החטא החילוני: מאפיין מובנה של המערכת (Feature). אם אף אחד לא צופה ואתה יכול לחמוק מזה, אין סיבה אובייקטיבית שלא לעשות זאת.
החטא הדתי: תקלה במערכת (Bug). הגמרא קוראת לזה "רוח שטות". כדי לחטוא, אדם מאמין חייב "לכבות" את המודעות שלו לנוכחות השם. באותו רגע, הוא לא מקיים אורח חיים דתי; הוא מתרגל חילוניות עם כיפה לראשו.
