It is important to remember that we light the Chanukah candles when it is dark [after sunset], cold [deep into the thick of winter] and beneath ten tfachim [where the Gemara Succah 5a says that שכינה doesn't descend].
To teach us that where it is dark, cold and seemingly Godforsaken - bring light and warm people up.
This is a lesson of Chanukah that applies all year round. There are a lot of people who could use more warmth, love and light.
