משום איבה

JTS had a Catholic professor who once asked HaGaon Rav Professor Shaul Lieberman z"l [he was fully Shomer Torah Umitzvos, a Gaon Olam and if he needed a kapparah for associating with the Conservative movement I hope that is long behind him] if it is true that if he is dying on Shabbos, R' Shaul would not violate Shabbos to save him. 

R' Shaul said: Not true. OF COURSE I would save you - even if that meant desecrating Shabbos.

The Catholic said: Yes, but you wouldn't save me because you care about my life. You would only save me to prevent hatred of Gentiles for Jews. [What we call משום איבה].

R' Shaul said: Not true! I would save you because I care about your life!

Afterwards, R' Shaul told the story to R' Aharon Lichtenstein [I believe] and explained that he said what he said .... משום איבה.
