I read an article where it was explained that the reason that *some* frum Jews live over-the-top-luxurious-lives because Jews have such capacious neshamos that if they are not filled with Ruchniyos then it has to be filled with LOOOTTSS of Gashmiyus.
Maybe.
But how would that explain how really wealthy goyim also live in houses much much bigger than they need, and/or they collect automobiles, and/or they spend a tremendous amount of money on yachts, clothing etc. etc. etc.?
My explanation is that if a person internalizes that our task in this world is כבוד שמים and מסילת ישרים פרק א then he lives a relatively simple life and uses anything extra for mitzvos. ומכלל הן נשמע לאו.
Of everyone is different and people are VERY complex and we usually do things for a confluence of reasons but that is one possibility.
